“This is a saggital section of a histology slide of intertransverse posterolateral lumbar fusion in New Zealand white rabbit implanted with hydroxyapatite granules as a bone graft substitute. The specimen was harvested after six-week observation and processed as plastic-embedded undecalcified bone sample and stained with Masson Goldner Trichrome. In this slide, the granules appear as round and dark materials, vary in sizes. The biomaterials are mostly surrounded by new bone trabeculae that are green in colour and adjacent osteoid seams (unmineralized bone matrix) displayed as reddish-orange.

The finding was presented at the Annual Congress of the World Society of Endoscopic, Navigated and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Kota Kinabalu, 21-23 May 2009. Authors: Zunariah B, Zamzuri Z, Hafiz A, Khalid KA”
