‘The picture refers to Ibnu Al-Haytham (circa 354 AH – 450 AH) who lived in Iraq and Egypt. He was a renowned physicist and a brilliant mathematician who influenced Averroes, Witelo, Roger Bacon and Kepler. He was also known to be a devout muslim.’

Readers would have noticed obvious differences to the journal since our inception in 2002. We have now changed the name to International Medical Journal Malaysia, in short IMJM. This is a reflection of our long term ambition to carve a niche of our own. The outlook of the journal has been extensively revamped too but the journal has, of course, remained loyal to its raison d’être, the ideals of International Islamic University Malaysia.

In this issue, we have included a supplement of abstracts presented at a recent national conference co-organized by the Kulliyyah and this is going to be a recurring feature for any conference organized or co-organized by the Kulliyyah.
One signifi cant change that had taken place is the affi liation of the editorial board members which is now composed of international experts by nearly half. This is in line with our plan for indexing in all major databases.

At present we are indexed in Open J Gate, Index Copernicus and the local MyAIS, and tracked by both Google and Yahoo search engines. The number of submissions to the journal (original articles and case reports) has gradually increased over the years. We now receive nearly 90 submissions in a year for the two volumes, an increase of just over 100% in 5 years. The number is split almost equally amongst local and international authors.

Finally, I wish to thank all our reviewers and also readers for supporting us over the years, and keep those articles coming.

“This is a saggital section of a histology slide of intertransverse posterolateral lumbar fusion in New Zealand white rabbit implanted with hydroxyapatite granules as a bone graft substitute. The specimen was harvested after six-week observation and processed as plastic-embedded undecalcified bone sample and stained with Masson Goldner Trichrome. In this slide, the granules appear as round and dark materials, vary in sizes. The biomaterials are mostly surrounded by new bone trabeculae that are green in colour and adjacent osteoid seams (unmineralized bone matrix) displayed as reddish-orange.
